Who Was Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee?
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee (1901-1961) was a prominent politician, lawyer, scholar, academic and educational reformer. Dr. Mookerjee was widely regarded as one of the most important public figures in India, having achieved fame and respect from an early age as a result of his exceptional accomplishments in education before becoming involved in politics.
Dr. Mookerjee will forever remain in the annals of Indian history as one of the foremost champions and purveyors of constitutional values, national integration and progress through education.
Dr. Mookerjee’s family is one of the most respected families in Bengal and he was born into an illustrious Bengali family. His father, Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, was a well-known educationist and the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. Following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Mookerjee excelled in his studies at the university, then studied law, and subsequently entered into public service.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta
In 1934, at just 33 years old, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, one of his most notable accomplishments.
He made numerous contributions as Vice-Chancellor, including introducing academic reforms, encouraging research, promoting Indian languages, and establishing higher education.
Role in an Independent India
In 1947, the first Union Cabinet of Independent India was led by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and included Dr. Mookerjee.
As India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply, he helped create an industrial foundation for post-Independence India.
Founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh
Dr. Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), which eventually evolved into the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in 1951.
The BJS was a nationalistic party that stood for cultural identity, democratic governance, and national unity.
Supporter of National Unity
Dr Mookerjee was a strong supporter of the full unifying of Jammu & Kashmir to India.
He opposed separate constitutional systems and became widely identified with the slogan:
“One country, no two constitutions, no two leaders, no two emblems.”
His views on the national unity continue to be part of the foundation of his political legacy.
