Recognizing the need for responsible and inclusive AI development, a new global initiative the AI for Good Global Commission has been launched to strengthen trust in AI and expand its benefits worldwide. Among its founding members are four prominent Indian business leaders, including Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Lakshmi N. Mittal, and Vishal Talwar. Announced on 3 July 2026, the high-level commission brings together more than 40 global leaders from governments, businesses, academia, and international organisations. Led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Salesforce, the initiative aims to ensure that artificial intelligence is developed and deployed responsibly while addressing major global challenges and reducing digital inequalities.

What Is the AI for Good Global Commission?

The AI for Good Global Commission is an international leadership platform designed to promote the responsible use of artificial intelligence for social and economic development.

The commission seeks to bring together policymakers, technology companies, industry leaders, researchers, and civil society representatives to develop practical solutions that ensure AI benefits people across all regions, especially developing countries.

Its primary objectives include,

  • Promoting trustworthy and responsible AI.
  • Expanding access to AI technologies.
  • Reducing the global digital divide.
  • Supporting sustainable development through AI.
  • Encouraging collaboration between governments and industry.

The commission builds upon the work of the ITU-UNESCO Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, extending its focus to the rapidly evolving AI ecosystem.

Indian Business Leaders on the Global AI Panel

India has secured strong representation in the founding commission through four distinguished business leaders,

  • Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries
  • Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman, Bharti Enterprises
  • Lakshmi N. Mittal, Executive Chairman, ArcelorMittal
  • Vishal Talwar, President, FedEx Dataworks and Executive Vice President, Chief Digital and Information Officer at FedEx Corporation

Their inclusion reflects India’s growing influence in global digital transformation, telecommunications, manufacturing, and artificial intelligence.

With India emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies, these leaders are expected to contribute valuable perspectives on technology adoption, connectivity, and innovation.

Global Leaders Driving the Initiative

The commission was jointly announced by,

  • Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda
  • Marc Benioff, Chair and CEO of Salesforce
  • Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

President Paul Kagame will serve as the Co-Chair of the commission, while Doreen Bogdan-Martin will serve as Vice-Chair.

The panel includes more than 40 influential global leaders representing technology companies, governments, healthcare, research institutions, and international organisations.

Technology Industry Leaders on the Commission

Several of the world’s leading technology executives have joined the commission, including,

  • Jensen Huang (NVIDIA)
  • Brad Smith (Microsoft)
  • Andy Jassy (Amazon)
  • Cristiano Amon (Qualcomm)
  • James Manyika (Google and Alphabet)
  • Albert Bourla (Pfizer)

The diverse membership reflects the commission’s objective of bringing together expertise from multiple sectors to guide the future development of artificial intelligence.

Why the Commission Was Created

Artificial intelligence has enormous potential to transform healthcare, education, agriculture, manufacturing, finance, and public services. However, concerns regarding trust, ethics, digital inclusion, privacy, and unequal access continue to grow.

The organisers believe that international cooperation is essential to ensure AI becomes a force for positive change rather than increasing existing inequalities.

According to the commission, nearly 2.2 billion people worldwide remain without internet access, limiting their ability to benefit from AI-driven technologies and digital services.

One of the commission’s major priorities will therefore be reducing digital divides while promoting equitable AI adoption across developed and developing nations.

Focus Areas of the AI for Good Global Commission

The commission is expected to work across several strategic areas, including,

Responsible AI Governance

Developing frameworks that encourage ethical, transparent, and trustworthy AI deployment.

Digital Inclusion

Expanding digital connectivity so that underserved communities can access AI-powered services.

Sustainable Development

Using AI to address global challenges such as healthcare, education, climate change, agriculture, and disaster management.

Global Collaboration

Strengthening partnerships among governments, technology companies, international organisations, and civil society.

Building Public Trust

Encouraging safe AI systems that protect privacy, reduce bias, and promote accountability.

Why India’s Participation Matters

India has become a major global technology hub, with rapid advancements in digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and telecommunications.

The participation of leading Indian industry figures demonstrates the country’s increasing role in shaping global AI policy and innovation.

Companies led by the Indian members are actively involved in digital connectivity, industrial technology, cloud services, manufacturing, and logistics sectors that are expected to play an important role in AI adoption worldwide.

Their involvement also aligns with India’s broader vision of promoting responsible AI while supporting inclusive digital growth.

First Meeting Scheduled in Geneva

The inaugural meeting of the AI for Good Global Commission will take place during the AI for Good Global Summit 2026, scheduled from 7–10 July 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The summit is expected to bring together governments, international organisations, technology companies, researchers, startups, and policymakers to discuss practical applications of artificial intelligence for global development.

The commission’s recommendations are likely to influence future discussions on international AI governance and cooperation.
