World Breastfeeding Week 2026 is observed in India and other countries between August 1st and August 7th to educate people about the role of breastfeeding in raising healthy babies. The event, which is spearheaded by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) through the POSHAN Abhiyaan programme, aims to promote awareness regarding the initiation of breastfeeding soon after childbirth, exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months, and continuation of breastfeeding along with complementary feeding.

This event emphasizes the importance of breastfeeding as a great nutritional source, as it leads to better immunity and cognitive development of the babies. By conducting awareness campaigns at various Anganwadi Centres and medical establishments, the Ministry is helping the families to support mothers and give newborns the best start in life.

World Breastfeeding Week 2026

Every year, World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated from August 1 to August 7 to promote breastfeeding as a key to child survival and growth.

In India, the initiative is being carried out under the auspices of POSHAN Abhiyaan. Various stakeholders are involved, such as,

  • Anganwadi Centers
  • Health institutions
  • ASHA workers
  • Community organizations
  • Regional and Federal Governments
  • Social media

The goal of the initiative is to promote better nutrition, maternal and infant.

Theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2026

During the World Breastfeeding Week of 2026, the slogan to be used is “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”

This slogan stresses the need to enhance existing systems of breastfeeding support and to create processes which yield results while being beneficial to children, mothers, families as well as societies at large.

The Relevance of Prebirth Feeding to Health

Breastfeeding is a way to provide complete nourishment for newborns and ensure various health benefits for both babies and mothers.

More precisely, breastfeeding helps,

  • Enhance immunity.
  • Satisfy infants’ needs.
  • Provide help in terms of brain development.
  • Facilitate physical growth.
  • Improve learning potential.
  • Lower the threat of malnourishment.
  • Strengthen the psychological connection of mothers and babies.

Breast milk is known to contain the perfect combination of substances which are required for infant development during the first six months of life.

Importance of the first 1,000 days

The campaign underlines the need to focus on the first 1,000 days of life, from watching the baby grow inside their mother’s womb to the point where they are about two years old.

This is thought of as an important time since the nutrition and care provided during this timeframe affect the following,

  • Brain development.
  • Physical growth.
  • Immune functions.
  • Ability to think.
  • Health outcomes in the long run.
  • Health in general.

Correct breastfeeding practice has been shown to help in constant improvement of the rates of survival as well as development of children.

Golden Hour: First Feeding in the First Hour

According to the Ministry, each and every newborn should be provided with breast milk in the first hour right after birth, which is referred to as Golden Hour.

What makes breastfeeding right after birth is the following,

  • It starts production of milk.
  • It allows to lower the death rate among newborns.
  • It leads to better immune function.
  • It ensures that breastfeeding will be successful in the future.
  • It allows for obtaining the so called skin-to-skin contact.

Significance of Colostrum

The thick yellowish fluid that is produced after giving birth is called colostrum.

It is generally called as the baby’s first natural immunization, colostrum is loaded with,

  • Antibodies
  • Proteins
  • Vitamins
  • Essential constituents

It enables a newborn to be shielded from diseases and enhance the immunity. It is suggested by the government to families not to throw away colostrum.

Exclusive Feeding for Six Months

The Government suggests that mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first six months post-delivery.

During this time babies have to be fed,

  • Only breast milk
  • Not even water
  • No honey
  • No ghutti
  • No glucose water
  • No baby formula, except in cases of medical emergency.

Breast milk supplies of all the nourishment along with adequate hydration required in the first six months of life.

Complementary Feeding After Six Months

Once infants reach six months old, suitable complementary foods may be introduced to their diet, while breastfeeding still continues.

The Ministry advises,

  • Nutritious complementary feeding for infants age six months and above.
  • Ongoing breastfeeding till the child turns two years and above if possible.

This strategy promotes proper growth and nutrition.

Assistance to Breastfeeding Mothers

The programme seeks to support mothers in dealing with difficulties in breastfeeding.

Healthcare professionals assist mothers in,

  • Correct feeding position.
  • Proper attachment.
  • Breastfeeding based on demand.

And working mothers are provided with information regarding breast milk pumping and safe milk storage in order to breastfeed while working.
