Why Is World Humanitarian Day Celebrated on 19 August?
This is a tribute to the bombing of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2003 where 22 humanitarian workers died, including UN Special Representative Sergio Vieira de Mello.
The UN General Assembly formally marked 19 August as World Humanitarian Day in 2008.
Since then, the day has become an annual international advocacy campaign conducted by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
